Logs
Often you would like to find out, if a client has already looked at material you have posted. Since Interdubs has a record of all activities this is very easy to do.
complete log
When you click on the
utils button then you find the
visitor log function. You will see here all access to all logins and files. To go back further in time click on the
older link above the listings. To go to newer items again use the
newer link that will appear if you are not on the most recent page anymore.
Login log
If you go to
edit log in the logins listing then you can see a log of the accesses only for that login by clicking on it's
log button.
File log
If you go to
edit files you can see the log for that file by clicking on it's
log button.
Log format
Each entry in the log listing results in one entry. The columns of the log entries are:
Date and Time
The access date and time are the first entry
Folder
When you click on the
folder you come to the edit folder screen.
Item accesss
The name of the item access will bring you to its
edit file screen.
If the file should have been deleted in the meantime, then you will read removed here.
access
The next item lists what happened with the item. Possible entries here are:
- view folder
- view jpeg
- view qt
- add comment
- delete comment
- download one
- download all
Please note that play in page will not be logged right now. See gotcha for a complete list of things that are wrong right now.
address
Each computer accessing Interdubs has to give it's IP address. That's where the content has to be sent to. Interdubs stores this and tries to make it more readable, if it can. This is the order of things you might find in this column, with the least prefered first:
- if the IP address can not be translated to an address, or if a new IP address has been added less than ten minutes ago Interdubs will show you the four digit IP address
- Domain name: Many IP addresses can be resolved against a domain Name. This often makes sense when clients use their company computers and not if they use a general ISP
- When the user has logged in, and given Interdubs its name, or has added comments then you will see this instead of the more generic information for the computer
After final line might give you further information about the address that was used to access Interdubs.
access watchdog
Interdubs watches it's access logs and reports odd patterns in realtime. With a
direct link you get ease of use, but it could also be that this this would get in the wrong hands. The watchdog mechanism will make sure that leaks will be close right away.
privacy concerns
Interdubs uses the information that every browser and computer user leaves in the internet. When you enter your name leaving a comment it will connect the cookie it set on the client computer with the name. This is done mostly to make the users live easier. In my experience it is important to be upfront about which information is stored how towards the users. If they care. Lately it seems that 90% of people don't care. But the concerns of the rest 10% are still valid. And then there are the remaining 1% that are paranoid because they do not understand how things work. The best remedy for those is to provide information and education as long there is patience.
