INTERDUBS hosting
INTERDUBS is hosted via the fastest connectivity available. Our data centers are located in the best possible hosting spots. While it is somewhat uncommon (and a bit expensive) to place servers directly where the Internet backbone cross connects, it allows us to get as much bandwidth as we need in quality that is second to none.
Your past uploads
Under
utilities
upload performance
you can see a history of your last uploads. This is a great page to see if you have experienced indeed a slow down of your connectivity.
On top of the page you can also see your uploads in context of all other uploads to your data center. You we EVER experience a general slow down then it would show up on this page. This has not happened yet.
Ingredients for great performance
Three distinct elements must work together to offer best possible performance for you (or your clients):
Your local connectivity Speed that you connect to the Internet with Connection speed of the Internet between INTERDUBS and you INTERDUBS speed
Only if all three parts work well you can enjoy high performance connections. Lets look at them in detail:
Local connectivity
Your computer does not connect directly to the Internet. You might use a wireless network. If you do then try a wired connection if available. Even small local issues can amplify tremendously in the overall performance you can achieve. If a wired connection is not available then make sure that you do not experience any wireless issues. If you find that the location that you are in impacts your network performance then this can be an indication that your wireless setup is not ideal.
Your connection speed to the Internet
When you experience performance issues it is easiest and best to test your local connection to the Internet. You can do for instance this by going to:
speedtest.net
We recommend to start with a local test first. Which is the detail of speedtest.net. Please write down the results for up and downloads, together with their units (see bits and bytes below). It is helpful to redo to the test, either right away or after a while.
If the two test results differ then it is recommended to run another test after a while. This will give you an idea about the fluctuation of your connection.
If the results are not ideal then it is helpful to test on a different computer if you can. In some cases it also makes a difference that your computer is connected wireless or via Ethernet.
Should your local results are close to the speed that your conection is rated at then please try a speedtest to the location of the INTERDUBS data center that you use.
If any of the results are not what you expect then it would be the best if you contact your Internet Service Provider and to work with them to get you better performance
Connection speed between you and INTERDUBS
Should your tests to other sites should show good bandwidth but INTERDUBS is not reachable fast for you then it is time to investigate the connection between you and our data center.
First establish the current performance via
http://www.interdubs.com/speedtest http://ny.interdubs.com/speedtest http://e1.interdubs.com/speedtest
respectively, depending on the data center you use. It is helpful to run the tests twice and to write down the results together with their unit. (Kilo , Mega, Bits , Bytes) Those matter.
The next step is to find out which parts of the Internet you use when you connect to INTERDUBS. On a Mac you can do this with the terminal command:
traceroute www.interdubs.com
on a PC it would be
tracert www.interdubs.com
(ny.interdubs.com for New York and e1.interdubs.com if you use the European data center)
You can also use the OS X network utility to perform a traceroute.
Please send us the results of these commands so that we can have a look if we can route around the troubled spot.
INTERDUBS speed
We have yet to experience a performance issue that is caused by our infra structure. It is very easy to check on this:
utilities
upload performance
This will display the performance of your recent uploads that used the classic uploader.
Clicking on the link:
see the stats for your uploads in midst of the ones from all other clients
is helpful to verify and double check that it is indeed your connection to INTERDUBS that is the cause.
While it has not been the cause for a problem we constantly check our performance automatically. Whenever a client reports a problem we check again if all systems work as they are supposed to.
automated testing
If you are concern about your connectivity then we can provide you with an automated utility that will generate and upload connection tests. This can create valuable data to identify intermittent issues with your connectivity.
bits and bytes
A common cause for confusion and concern is that bandwidth gets usually measured in bits per second or bps. Download speed however is being displayed frequently as Bytes per second or Bps. Since 8 bit make one byte the Bps values are 1/8th of corresponding bit per second speed.
Please write down all values you measure together with the units.
