Playback in quicktime X

With Apple's OS X Version 10.6 "Snow Leopard" apple introduced a new quicktime player Version.

Many things have changed with this complete rewrite of the venerable Quicktime player.

One pleasant feature is that Quicktime X can playback h264 files from any point in the file. It can -together with the INTERDUBS- allow the user to jump anywhere in a very long quicktime.

This is especially helpful in dailies, where clips have a long duration. On iOS devices like the iPad this behavior is the default.

Using a link to load a file into the quicktime player

In order to enable this feature the keyword

IDXHTML_OPENWITH_QTX

needs to be placed into the configuration

HTML line for each file

Should the file be playable by quicktime then the following image will appear:

Clicking on this image will launch quicktime and load the file into it.

Caveats

As of Feb 2012:

If you have a quicktime 7 player open then the computer will use this player to open the file in. Quicktime player 7 lacks the ability to skip the playhead into areas of the clip that have not been downloaded. If the feature 'asset links will only work on INTERDUBS pages' is enabled then this feature will not work.
