Icon Aspect Ratio

Background

Traditionally INTERDUBS uses the source aspect ratio of the clip / movie for the creation of icons. The X dimension will be the same for a given icon size flavor and Y will be scaled accordingly. It can be helpful to override this default behaviour to generate consistent sized icons while clips with mixed aspect ratios are being presented.

Implementation via configuration

INTERDUBS default configuration is be visible in each dialog that creates icons. These values can be overwritten if so desired.

Creation only

The system described here applies only for the creation of icons going forward. Uploads in the web interface and icon selection via the pick icon screen will use the settings described on this page. Existing icons will be unaffected. It can be handy to select multiple clips and then set an icon percentage to recreate images with a specifc aspect ratio for many clips at once.

Configuration

The aspect ratio of icons is being controlled via a set of configuration variables. Only the settings for global or segment are being considered right now. The default behaviour is identical to former implementations. The configuration variables are dependent on each other.

Use source

Use source will use the aspect ratio of the source material and will generate icons accordingly. This is the same behavior that INTERDUBS always had.

Force crop

INTERDUBS will create an icon with an aspect ratio that is defined under Enforced Aspect Ratio. It will either cut the sides or top and bottom of the source so that it matches the desired aspect ratio. Another way to describe this mode is that the shorter side / lenght will fit the icon. Content of the source image will be lost in this mode.

Force letterbox

A letter box will place the source inside of an icon that uses the aspect ratio defined under Enforced Aspect Ratio. The entire image will be visible. The rest of the icon will be filled with the color defined under Icon letterbox color.

Enforced Aspect Ratio

When Force crop or Force letterbox are in effect then INTERDUBS uses the aspect ratio defined here to shape the resulting icon frame. The actual image will be treated according to either option (see above). The aspect ratio here will be entered in the 'one to' fashion. The default value of 1.7777 for instance expresses the aspect ratio of 1 to 1.777 or 16x9.

Letterbox color

When the Force letterbox mode is effect then this variable controls the color of the letterbox fill. It is expressed as a web color with six digits.
